A Reflection: Surviving the End of the World
I saw a new article on CNN.com this morning that Harold Camping, the guy whose prediction of the apocalypse amused the world, had a mild stroke recently - and noticed that "666" people has recommended it. Now how cute is that.
Camping previously announced through his network (supported by donations worth $80 million) that the world would end on May 21, 2011, and that a few percentage of the population would be "raptured", or immediately taken to heaven. The rest of us sinners would then stay to experience tribulation and eventually perish on October 21,2011 by some sort of epic disaster.
When the May 21 Armageddon fizzled, he made this excuse: that it was a "spiritual end of the world", and we would not be able to see it in a physical way. The real destruction - still October 21. Egad.
Gee, this guy is really persistent about his predictions, considering he already freaking messed up his other prophecies way back 1994.
How do we know that the world isn't going to end on Oct. 21? Well, the answer is: We don't know. What we DO know is that no one on this earth or even universe can predict it. No one can possibly know when Christ will come. These scriptures tell us that again, the October 21, 2011 prediction is a whole lot of baloney:
1 Thessalonians 5:2-4 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.
Mark 13:32 Jesus said, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Mark 13:32).
We don't know when earthquakes or other disasters may come, but we know we must prepare - such as emergency bags, first aid kits, flashlights - so that when it does happen, we know we are equipped. When we are equipped, we feel safer and secured.
It's the same with Armageddon. We don't know when it will come, but we must be prepared. How? It's by knowing and obeying. Just like preparing for disasters, we should KNOW the proper procedures as relayed to us by informed people just in case an earthquake happens, and we should DO these procedures because if we don't, we might pay with our lives. We must KNOW God by constantly studying His Word which is in the form of the Bible, and by understanding it, we would be inspired to OBEY or DO the things he has told us to do.
1 John 2:3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God[a] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
This way, we would be comforted, and it wouldn't matter when the end of the world is. We already know that that the end will come, but it is not the time that should instill fear in us, but rather, HOPE that one day, this old system of things on earth will eventually be transformed into a paradise for all of us, where there is no more sickness, evil and death.
